The Menopause Effect: An Appalachian Unmasking

The Menopause Effect: An Appalachian Unmasking
Black and white photographs by Anna Mullins

Art has spent centuries celebrating women at the start of adulthood and looking away from the decades that follow. The Menopause Effect turns the camera back. Anna Mullins photographs women in perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause across Appalachia, often meeting them for the first time on the day of the shoot. Once the subject is out in the open, the stories come quickly, on front porches and at kitchen tables, things some of these women have never said aloud to husbands, sisters, or even doctors.

The portraits are tender and direct: hands resting on changed bellies, reading glasses pushed up into curls, a cigarette between worked fingers, two friends leaning into each other. Mullins sets these women within the landscape of the region, where reaching women’s health care can mean a long drive and conversations about the body often go unspoken. Portraits taken at rallies and protests hang beside quiet domestic scenes, carrying a question through the whole series: is menopause political?

Created by Anna Mullins and powered by Patchwork Kinfolx, The Menopause Effect is an ongoing project that is judgment free, gender affirming, and rooted in Appalachia.

Each photograph is hand-signed and professionally framed in black wood under glass, with acid-free black core matting and an acid-free foam core backboard. Ready to hang. Meaningful work for a home, office, or practice, and a thoughtful gift for a mother, a friend, or anyone navigating this stage of life.
