A hand-signed black and white portrait from The Menopause Effect: An Appalachian Unmasking, Anna Mullins' ongoing series photographing women across Appalachia as they move through one of life's biggest changes. Each portrait is shown alongside the woman's own words.

Looking in the mirror & just wondering....when did my eyelids become so heavy? Should I try to remain expressionless in an effort to hide these crows feet, forehead wrinkles & funky jowls? Do any of these creams, serums or potions really work? I count 8 pair of readers in my home & 4 on my desk at work. All different strengths, depending on the day. Why do I feel like a blind prune? Is this middle age? Wait a minute: the average life expectancy is 78. I'm way past the mid life point. Did I even have a mid-life crisis? I have fewer years ahead of me than behind me. What have I accomplished? How will I be remembered? I have so much to do, but I'm tired & need a really good moisturizer. Damn, why didn't anyone force me to wear sunscreen in my youth?
