EXTRAS: MacKenna Hanson

EXTRAS explores how imagery shapes and erases identity. Across thirteen works, MacKenna Hanson moves between recognizable portraiture and figures reduced to shapes on a board, using a deliberately wide range of materials: oil on linen over half-chalk ground, distemper, gouache, wax pastel, ink on Bristol, and oil on primed cardboard.

Her sources are equally mixed, combining found imagery, original composition, and art-historical master copies. The result addresses what she calls the global flattening of time, the condition of having all of human history accessible at once, and what that access does to a visual language.

Hanson's attention to materials carries its own argument. An oil painting on linen and an oil painting on cardboard hang here on the same level, which collapses the class hierarchy the materials themselves are meant to signal.

EXTRAS was made during Hanson's first year out of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is a body of work about relationships: hers with the materials, the figures' with each other, and the viewer's with the act of looking.
