Every Purchase Directly Supports The Artist
James Powers is a painter and woodworker from the Appalachian coalfields whose work unearths the folklore, flora, and ghosts of the mountains. Using found materials—old wood panels, discarded masonite, and salvaged canvas—he builds paintings that carry the weight and memory of the region’s landscape. Every surface tells a story; every frame is crafted by hand, echoing the traditions of making do, of building beauty from what’s left behind.
His imagery moves between the seen and the unseen: windigos and cryptids, coal dust and wildflowers, the remnants of industry and the persistence of nature. Powers paints the land as a living presence—one haunted by its histories yet still fiercely alive. The Appalachian wilderness, the deep mines, and the small towns that cling to the ridges all become mythic terrain, where Celtic spirits meet the modern South, and the line between reality and folklore thins.
By working with upcycled and reclaimed materials, Powers challenges the idea of disposability—of both resources and stories. His art honors what remains, finding resilience and grace in what’s been weathered. Each piece is a conversation between decay and rebirth, between the coal seams below and the green canopy above.

Formato Fine Arts
100 w main Street
The home of Formato Fine Arts sits inside one of Wytheville’s most historic structures. Built as the original courthouse and jailhouse, the building still carries its early brick and limestone. After sitting vacant for many years, it has been restored with care while keeping its original character intact. Today the space blends historic architecture with contemporary art, creating a place where the past and present meet in the center of downtown Wytheville.
