This July, Formato Fine Arts is proud to present Rooted in Place, an exhibition of oil paintings by Anika Whittier, on view July 23 through September 9. Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, July 23 at 7 PM, where the artist will be in attendance.

Meet the Artist

Anika Whittier is a hardworking mom and painter based in Fort Chiswell, Virginia. A trained photographer, she brings a true understanding of light and composition to every canvas. Living close to town while embracing rural life, Anika finds inspiration in her garden, her children, and the sweeping views of Southwest Virginia.

Her subjects range from the barns and historic buildings of the surrounding area to the wildflowers and garden blooms that mark the changing seasons. Often working on site in plein air, she paints with a direct connection to the landscape that shows in every piece.

Anika has a delicate hand. Her feathery brushstrokes can capture the essence of a butterfly in motion while keeping the integrity of its form, a balance of softness and structure that defines her work.

About the Exhibition

Rooted in Place gathers a body of work that celebrates the quiet beauty of Southwest Virginia. Through Anika's eyes, familiar scenes become something worth pausing for: weathered barns holding generations of stories, flowers catching the morning light, landscapes shaped by both memory and place.
