A hand-signed black and white portrait from The Menopause Effect: An Appalachian Unmasking, Anna Mullins' ongoing series photographing women across Appalachia as they move through one of life's biggest changes. Each portrait is shown alongside the woman's own words.

Perimenopause is not just a medical transition. It's a personal one. It's a reshaping of how I move through the world: physically, mentally, and emotionally. More confident. It's teaching me to pay attention, to adjust, and to meet myself where I am instead of where I used to be. To be grateful for my circle of friends and proud of the life I've built.

Even in the discomfort, there is something honest about it. Something that asks you to slow down, to listen, and, in its own quiet way, to admire your resilience.
