A hand-signed black and white portrait from The Menopause Effect: An Appalachian Unmasking, Anna Mullins' ongoing series photographing women across Appalachia as they move through one of life's biggest changes. Each portrait is shown alongside the woman's own words.

My mom, my aunt, my grandma, they just didn't talk about it. With my daughter, it'll be completely different. We talk about everything, completely open about everything. There's nothing that we don't talk about. You know, she's only 11, but things happen with her body. I won't tell her she is fine or ignore it, or make it so she can't ask me. She can come to me and say, What is this? And she has. And I would never, ever, ever keep her from that.

In Appalachia we don't talk about it, and we don't teach it. This generation of women going through menopause are changing that.
