A hand-signed black and white portrait from The Menopause Effect: An Appalachian Unmasking, Anna Mullins' ongoing series photographing women across Appalachia as they move through one of life's biggest changes. Each portrait is shown alongside the woman's own words.

I am more comfortable in letting things go, learning that I am in my best years, it's just learning this new phase in life. Not saying I'm conquering this but I'm learning to adapt. I feel it is adapting. It's still frustrating, maddening, I scream a lot, oh yes and cry, but it's all okay. I just wish that society and the medicine field would catch up to women's medical needs. Not dismiss our symptoms to just being a difficult woman who has gone crazy!!! In this day it baffles my mind that we are still being judged in this manner.
