Hannah Davis
Emotional Ambivalence

Emotional Ambivalence is a body of work rooted in Hannah Davis’ lived transition from art student to working artist. Created in the months following the completion of her BFA, this collection reflects the psychological and emotional dualities that surface when structure dissolves and self-definition becomes self-directed.

As Hannah writes, “The act of ‘making’ is an answer to many of my problems. Something I can understand unlike anything else in life.” The works in this exhibition do not attempt to solve or resolve. They remain in process. Honest. Evolving. Forever searching.

Within this collection, abstraction and figuration exist in tension. There are moments where paint asserts control and moments where it is allowed to rest in states of incompleteness. Hannah describes the difficulty of control in abstraction, and the necessary surrender that follows. Layered shapes, lines, and atmospheric spaces drift between illusion and memory. Figures re-emerge with renewed confidence, communicating presence through minimal but intentional markmaking.

Emotional Ambivalence is not about clarity. It is about holding contradiction. Strength and vulnerability. Movement and stillness. Certainty and doubt.

This exhibition invites viewers into that in-between space. Not to arrive at answers, but to witness the evolution of a voice discovering itself in real time.
