It stalks the empty mines, moving through the blasted rock and torn earth that industry has left behind.
About the Artist
James Powers is a painter and woodworker from McDowell County, West Virginia. He works with upcycled materials, building his surfaces and frames from old canvas, plywood, masonite, and salvaged wood. His art merges Appalachian folklore, cryptid mythology, coal field history, and the visual language of 80s and 90s pop culture. His paintings explore themes of environmental change, hidden forces in the mountains, and the thin line between good and evil.
