James Powers is a painter and woodworker from McDowell County, West Virginia. He builds his surfaces from salvaged canvas, plywood, masonite, and reclaimed wood. His work combines Appalachian folklore, cryptid stories, coal field history, and 80s and 90s pop culture. Themes of good and evil, environmental change, and the spirits moving through the mountains appear throughout his practice. James graduated from Columbia College in West Virginia with a degree in illustration and hand builds every frame.
