UnframedThe Mountaineer is one of James Powers’ darker interpretations of Appalachian identity and the masks people wear when causing harm. It is a warning. James paints a beheaded mountaineer mascot staked in the foreground - with run down excavation mobiles and a factory billowing smoke.

The Mountaineer stands in tension with the region it claims to work for. It represents the people and systems that suffer from their water being soiled.

About the Artist
James Powers is a painter and woodworker from McDowell County, West Virginia. He builds every surface by hand using salvaged canvas, plywood, masonite, and reclaimed wood. His work blends Appalachian folklore, 80s and 90s pop culture, cryptid myths, and the lived realities of the coal fields. Themes of good and evil, environmental change, and spiritual unrest run through his paintings.
