The Legend Says is James Powers’ interpretation of the Windegow, a cryptid rooted in stories of powerful winds told by Native peoples across North America. James connects this legend to the strange and extreme weather now hitting the mountains where he grew up. High winds that never existed in his region before, sudden storms, and even tornados have become a new reality, and he paints these moments as living forces moving through the hollers.
James builds this work on an upcycled surface, carrying the marks and history of whatever material he salvaged. His lines and textures echo the way wind carves through trees and old structures. The piece stands at the edge of folklore and lived experience, capturing the feeling that something ancient wakes when the storms roll in.
